OVERALL , calvin hughes was two years older than maria, but the two had been a match made in heaven since the day they'd met on her twenty first birthday. the two began dating and a little over a month into their relationship, she discovered she was pregnant with his child. on july thirty first, nineteen ninety two, twenty one year old maria rodriguez went into labor, giving birth to her first child fourteen hours later. charlotte was named after calvin's mother, maria's sister, and both parents. she lived eight years of her life being an only child. her mother stayed at home, selling avon, and teaching charlotte how to be wise and independant and strong. her father travelled alot for work, so she rarely saw him, and she didn't mind until june third, when her mother died of complications during child birth. for the first four years of joey's life, calvin spent a lot of time at home, and maria's sister moved in to help raise the new baby and keep the family on their feet. charlotte resented her sister, though. without josephine, there would still be a maria. every birthday joey had, charlie refused to celebrate, and made sure that everyone knew that the day joey was born was the day her mother died and that wasn't something to party over. when joey was five, though, and was really able to comprehend the situation, she refused to celebrate her birthday. no cake. no tiara. no cards. no presents. she wouldn't leave her bedroom. that was the day charlie realized she was wrong and that josephine was her baby sister and mom-or-no-mom, she always would be. the two grew close after that, near inseprable. delores eventually found a boyfriend, married, and moved. calvin eventually returned to his usual schedule. charlie and joey lived on their own, raising one another.
