---------------------------------------------------------------------
Rhyleigh was always that shy little girl type that never would be able to defend herself. She was always considered weak in everyone‘s eyes, even her own. She was never able to fight on her own, there was always someone that came in and saved her. It wasn’t like she was ungrateful, but having everyone else speak for you and make you seem even weaker for having to have someone fight your battles, it really made her feel beyond weak and helpless, she hated that feeling, but she also was happy there was anyone who would ever do that for her. At least, they used to. Rhyleigh;s sister Alexis was the one that still stood up for her sister. Lex is always there for her sister, they were twins after all, and although her sister was apart of the so called popular crowd, she still wasn’t afraid, like some people, to stick up for someone that she cared for. Blake on the other hand, well, he was someone that would hide everything behind those broad shoulders and ignore everything. Blake never stood up for her, at least not explicitly, but he still was never there for her. He was always hiding behind his crowd of people. And, although he never let them hurt her physically, he still did nothing for her mentally. Back when they were kids though, it was all so different. Up through middle school he had her back, he was there through thick and then and every time she needed someone to help her through anything, he was there. Or at least, he used to be. Now, he was always in the weight rooms with the guys telling stories about all the girls they ‘hooked up’ with. It was a pity to Rhyleigh that they didn’t apply themselves to their full potential. Although she wasn’t the biggest fan of these people, she still wished they could see how smart they actually could be, she knew somewhere in everyone there was a smart, dedicated person, and although she couldn’t very well tell them all to stick their noses in a book, she still wished they’d just do it and get off her back. In the heat of the moment though Rhyleigh couldn’t take responsibility for the things that came out of her mouth, it was just a split reaction.
Rhyleigh looked behind the boys that stood in front of her, spotting Blake. He had his head turned down, as usual. She could also see a small smile on his face, she figured it was because of her come back. She thought it was a little witty, anything to make the guy flinch, even if it did mean getting hit, something she hoped Blake would never let happen. She knew Blake like the back of her hand, but she still didn’t know him when they were at school. Hell, she never talked to him for longer than thirty seconds after her little run ins with his crowd, for the fear that one would come looking for him and spot him talking to their finished prey. It was a frustrating situation they had their selves in but, she had agreed to it, so she could never fully blame Blake, she did have a mind of her own, at least, when she wasn’t around Blake. When she was with her crew, yes the dorks and people with huge classes and overalls, she was one of the smartest, and that was what made them like you. Rhyleigh was never considered the beautiful and popular one, no, that was her sister’s territory. All Rhyleigh had for herself was her smarts, that was one of the reasons she was so unattractive to all the guys at school, except the nerds. She never liked calling them that, one she was making fun of herself saying so, and second, because all of those people were sweet and kind and only wanted to be accepted by everyone as more than just a nerd that was an easy target. Most of them, she even considered her friends. They all were there when she needed help on studying, and making notes, and even just people she could just sit down and talk to. Sure Rhyleigh had other friends besides Blake, but none of them were Blake. He was the one that was there with her in her bedroom the night her dad left them. He was the one that stood by her side, up until high school anyway, and he was the one that she loved more than anyone in the world. It hurt her to think of him as her enemy in school, see him with her real enemies. She never thought of it that way, but now, it was starting to feel that way.
“dude you can’t hit a girl. That’s weak.” Blake’s voice knocked her out of her thoughts. She could see his hand on the guys shoulder and see the demand in his face and voice. Rhyleigh quickly turned away, looking at the ground, she didn’t want to seem obvious that she was looking at him like a hero in that moment. They would most likely see her and make fun of it. And in turn, make Blake have to say something to cover his tracks. Something along the lines of, ‘that’s pathetic, she really thinks I did that for her!’ then they’d all share a laugh and she would most likely run to the bathroom so no one could see her cry. It was a shame how bad their relationship had become. She couldn’t even think of him the same way anymore, she didn’t know what to expect from him anymore. She didn’t even want to think of him being directly cruel to her. Rhyleigh smiled to the ground, hiding it as well as she possibly could before feeling the guy take his hand off her shoulder. She could already feel the bruising from how tight his hands had actually gotten. Next thing she knew she was slammed against the locker, a rush of pain spiked in her back, she squinted her eyes in pain before sighing and looking back up at the jock. She began to rub her shoulder. “come on. Let’s get to weightlifting. I’m bored with this scene.” Blake’s voice roared in her hears, she loved the raspy-ness of it, but she tried to act conspicuous as her eyes followed them all leave down the hall to the weight room. She dropped her arms from her shoulders as they left, her eyes followed Blake until her stopped to tell the guys something. She turned to face her open locker and grabbed her math book that sat at the top. She could hear footsteps bypass her before they stopped and turned around. She already knew who it was, and she knew the exact thing he was going to say to her. “I’m sorry. Are you okay?” her head snapped up to look at his dark eyes. She loved how dark they were, they were on the verge of black. When she was younger his eyes used to scare her, she’d never seen any eyes that dark.
Rhyleigh took a deep breath before she turned to face her locker again. Most days it happened this way. Blake would lie to his friends just to sneak back to tell her he was sorry and ask if she was okay. Sometimes it stung, she could feel it in her heart every time he came back to ask her that. This time was no different. She could feel it now, it felt like a hundred stinging bees plunging toward her heart. She shuttered slightly before grabbing another book and closing her locker. Rhyleigh turned up to look him in the eyes, and smiled like she was the happiest person on earth. It took every fiber of her being, but she was able to do it. “Yeah. Why wouldn’t I be?” she said turning her body around towards the hallway. Usually that would be the end of their conversation before he went back to his double life. Sometimes Rhyleigh wished she could just quit him, cold turkey. She wanted to so badly to stop feeling like she was someone below him at school. She hated seeing him with the cheerleaders and flirting with them. She hated him laughing at the dirty jokes that he had with his team mates. She always felt a little jealous because she never could know how those girls felt, talking and flirting with Blake. Seeing him as this big, hot jock that was so interested in her that he came and talked to her flat out because he though she was hot. She wanted for once to feel all eyes on her, especially from him. But, that’s not how it was, and she knew It never would be, not when she was her and he was him. She was just a friend outside of the school grounds, and she was nothing more, just someone he could use for backup, and although Rhyleigh knew that, she still couldn’t bring herself to even tell him how badly that hurt her. “Blake?” she said, turning around to face him. “why are we friends?” she asked bluntly. She felt like she should just turn around and walk away without another word and just go one living life like she had been. But, she found herself walking closer to him, she felt determined to find the answer, she wasn’t sure why, but, maybe this was what she needed. Maybe she needed to know the truth before she went on with this little deal they had. Rhyleigh’s eyes were big with fear, she didn’t want to hear the answer, she was sure it was going to be a lie anyways.
